Accreditation meaning : What is accreditation? It is a process by which an outside agency evaluates and grants approval to an educational institution or program. Accreditation usually occurs at the institutional level, meaning that it covers the entire school or department, rather than specific programs or courses.

The goals of accreditation include ensuring that all students have access to high-quality education and training programs; ensuring that institutions are accountable to their academic communities; reducing student debt; supporting access to quality postsecondary education; and improving employment opportunities for graduates.

Types of Accreditation

Accreditation can be done on a national, regional, or institutional level. It can also be broken down into three different types:, institutional, specialized, and programmatic.

Institutional accreditation evaluates an entire institution to determine if it meets certain standards. This type of accreditation can only be awarded by an external agency.

Specialized/pre-accreditation is similar to institutional accreditation in that it evaluates an entire institution and awards its seal of approval. The difference between specialized/pre-accreditation and institutional accreditation lies in the fact that specialized/pre-accreditation looks only at one area or aspect of an institution’s offerings (such as nursing education).

Programmatic accreditation focuses on programs within an institution while still evaluating the overall quality of the institution as well.
